Maximum distance to which we can extend a computer, internet connection in the home or office

The maximum cable length for a computer local area network is 100 meters. (We are not talking about optical networks here – the routes can be much longer there). Why is this so and is it mandatory to follow it? And, if a higher quality copper cable or a higher category cable is used won't we achieve a better result?

For example, we bought a box that contains 305m UTP or FTP cable. Can't we make a connection between our house and the neighboring one, which is located 300m away? No. It can't be done, unfortunately!

This is because all known standards (excluding the latest one cat.8) for cable networks define cable routes of 100 meters (90m main route + 10m connecting cables) at room temperature. Based on these standards, network cables are produced and such cables are used for computer networks and the signal from your switches and routers runs on these cables. Only by following the standards will we guarantee the speed we need.

Main route (link) – It is built with a single-core (solid) cable of the required category.

Patch cables – are made of stranded cable and are no longer than 20m.
